  2. bedworm Says:

  4. D Says:

  6. D Says:

    Richard Bona + Bobby Mcferrin
    something light hearted :)

    vocal is the best instrument
    power of improvisation
    guitar bassists are absolutly sexy

  11. bedworm Says:

  12. D Says:

  13. D Says:

  14. bedworm Says:

  15. D Says:

  16. Citta Says:

  17. Citta Says:

  18. D Says:

    =D

  22. D Says:

  23. D Says:

想起一句布鲁斯歌词,they call it stormy monday , but tuesday is just as bad 。

  38. bedworm Says:

  39. D Says:

  43. D Says:

knew u ll love it, come over we ll have a ball….. oh btw percussionist Munyungo Jackson was in the quartet too, Amazingly good musicians.

BM rarely rarely performs nowadays, for the past decades he’s been playing home with his drummer friend as DUO, and he’s been focusing on compositions. —- The composition, improvisation, as well as precision and clarity were amazing live! Not to mention how beautiful bass clarinet sounded. I totally adored BM last year’s album.

Why don’t we all arrange to go for Montréal jazz festival one year. all people go :) whoever we can find. It is not impossible to arrange visas, my friend went oversea for private reasons and had no problem at all.

  44. D Says:

went to a gig, Mark Egan was the bass guitarist, great stuff! after the gig, I ran straight into MARK on the hall way to the toilet. (he even had his bass guitar in hand when he wanted to go to the toilet!)

We were looking into each other’s eyes and smiling. Close encounter! I wanted to tell him how much i adored a piece they did, turning jimmy hendrix into Monk, 20 mins nonstop! But all in a suddern someone else grabbed him, all we said to each other was “After you….thank you….” while he opened the door for me:(

sometimes I have so much love/passion, but cant find the way to express it.

This Sat seeing SA Hugh Masekela’s gig.

  49. bedworm Says:

Seeing Juan Martín tmrw nite for some flamenco guitar.

  55. D Says:

oh and Taraf de Haidouks live friday nite for romany gypsy music :)

  56. D Says:

oh and sunday is the Selim Sesler (Turkish clarinettist ) and Vassilis Saleas (Greece clarinet)concert i will be going to. Interesting Turkish Greecky Gypsy fusion :p Shall be a new experience for me.

and 2 wks later Diego El Cigala show.

  57. bedworm Says:

still waiting for the cd, how ever, feel good having something to wait :D

Diego El Cigala, i have the album Black Tears with Bebo Valdes, so beautiful. (i went to Chucho Valdes’s show in March, hot. ) And i remember one of Cigala’s album is with Paco de Lucia, hehe, dont know who will be the guitarist of the coming show.

For others, i don’t know. But, gypsy music !
I have no idea about what Turkish or Greecky clarinet sounds like, let alone the fusion. must be interesting.

and , since i saw the Tony Gatlif movie Gadjo dilo, romany gypsy music always means something to me :)

    and…can you see Chinese now?

  58. D Says:

    chocho is cool :)

Seeing Tony Gatlif’s Latcho Drom this Sunday. Great film portraiting gypsy music!

No the romania, turkish and greeks are not super famous, however will be very interesting.

Seeing this Chilean guitarist next wk, interpreting 18th-century Baroque music ,20th-century Spanish classics and contemporary Latin American music from Argentina, Chile and Venezuela.
(Bach on guitar absolutely beautiful, coz its a string instrument.)

Tell you what,Cecil Taylor is playing on my birthday in July, with Anthony Braxton, Tony Oxley, couldnt be happier! And the next day Ornette Coleman live.

  59. D Says:

Juan Martín is a native of Andalucía.(like in movie VENGO:) played with Herbie Hancock and miles davis before. Played for Piccaso on his 90th bthday:) He tries to do fusion with different type of music, however more on the Flamenco side. 4 stars.

Yeah might consider purchasing a laptop next week, so hopefully will get chinese sorted.

  60. D Says:

For clarinet,Selim Sesler (the Turky) was marvellous! On the other hand the Greek dude was dead boring. He tries to westernise Greek tunes and his band was rubbish, with no intense interactions in between.

Latcho Drom is beautiful!!!! It tops my personal top 3 favourite movies. You have to grab a copy if can. No narrative, 1000 yrs of gypsy journey, incredible music and cinematography engaging story telling.
Taraf de Haidouks was feautured in the film, same with the incredible flamenco lady in red from Vengo. Beautiful. :)

  61. bedworm Says:

I have seen Latcho Drom, and got the DVD. Which one is Taraf de Haidouks? the old man play violin under a tree?

  62. D Says:

Ah that weeping volin with one soft string! (Wish I was that little boy:) yes I believe he is one of them. Also the big band with strings and accordions.

glad uve got it =D good? Cryptogramophone interesting Indie label.

Seeing BILLY COBHAM on Friday!£40 so expensive… I am sooo broke…. too many cinemas gigs concerts photo-exhibits art gallary events :( want to buy a new lens 4 camera.

  63. D Says:

seeing the movie “Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten” tonight :)

  64. D Says:

went to a rock event over the wkend, saw kaiser chiefs, daft punk, faithless, white stripes etc. Had the Diego concert, he was collaberating with a cuban style pianist — a flamenco-cuban fusion night! reminded me about the Bebo and Diego album. But to be honest I prefer him doing straight flamenco thou, because when fuse with entertaining cuban sound, the deep saddness of flamenco got lost and music tasted general.

Discovered this great Bulgarian band with lead accordion player Martin Lubenov. The accordionist, guitarist, drummer and especially one clarinet player were excellent live! I am totally in love with accordion the instrument. so important in gypsy band as well as in tango. So many great world music band, pity none of them are well known to the world.

BILLY COBHAM was super cool! had one Steelpan player and a super cool precussionist in his band, the steelpan fused with the electrica keyboard/bass guitar created a very unique sound. it was wicked.

  65. D Says:

  67. D Says:

Free Jazz hehe.

  68. D Says:

  69. bedworm Says:

  70. D Says:

    Thx sweetie =D
Got the new JM+TW+Jaco CD today. 35 mins. From a friend’s friend thou :( Will have to return it tomorrow :(

  71. bedworm Says:

    TRIO OF DOOM

  72. bedworm Says:

    http://www.cs.cf.ac.uk/Dave/mclaughlin/art/present.html

So what happened at the “Havana Jam” with the Trio of Doom?

It was such a shame. Tony and Jaco and I had rehearsed here in New York, and what a trio that was! What a pleasure it was to play with them! Tony and Jaco were just so much together. After one rehearsal, we actually went in to record with Joni Mitchell (for her Mingus album). We recorded one tune and then later they wiped Tony and me off the tracks, which I thought was a shame. But rehearsals were happening and we went down to Havana with high expectations. We each had a tune that we brought into the trio. We started off our set with my tune, “Dark Prince,” which is an uptempo C minor blues with altered changes. It was really a chance to stretch, but Jaco just threw the music down, walked back to his amp, turned it up to 11 and started playing A major really loud against it. I was looking at Tony like, “what is going on here?” It was nothing like the rehearsals. He did the same to Tony’s tune. Then he went out and did his whole audience routine. It was a fiasco. The Bay of Gigs. And I was so mad at Jaco. He came off stage saying, “Yeah, man, that was the shit!” and all this. And I told him, “I have never been more ashamed in my life to be on stage with somebody. That was the worst shit I ever heard in my life. I don’t wanna see your face for at least a week.” I really was mad at him. Tony was mad at the time but he wouldn’t say anything. But he got mad later. We went into the studio later to try to do something but there was a big fight between them… not really a big fight. Tony just flipped out and smashed his drums and walked out of the studio. And that really tore Jaco to strips. So it was evident to me during this period that something was going on with Jaco that didn’t really have too much to do with music. There was something happening in his mind. I don’t know what it was. It was some kind of idea or image of himself of what he had to do or what he was supposed to do. And it was really crazy. It certainly had nothing to do with what we were playing. It was strictly showtime. It was sad. But you can never take away from what he’s done. He single-handedly revolutionized bass guitar… his sound, his chords, his harmonics. I mean, Jaco just blew the shit open. It’s amazing what he did to bass guitar.

  73. D Says:

JM: (laughs) Yes indeed, the Trio of Doom. That trio was unbelievable. It was amazing. When they were on it was unbelievable to play with those guys. Anyway, rehearsals were phenomenal. We had only three tunes that we were going to play (at the historic Havana Jam in Cuba). So we went down to Havana and we had a tune each. We started off with my tune, “The Dark Prince,” which was a kind of blues in Cminor with some altered changes. But the thing is, Jaco altered everything. He turned his amp up to 11 and started to play A major, which is like a little far away from C minor…and unbelievably loud! So we start to play the tune, Tony’s looking at me, I’m looking at Tony and it’s like, “What the fuck'” And in the meantime Jaco’s upfront with the bass between his legs, doing his thing…it was almost like Jimi Hendrix. And the whole set went like that. When we finished the set, I was so angry at Jaco. Tony too. And we walked off stage and Tony was already up and running to the bathroom…he was about to throw up. Anyway, Jaco came down and said, “Oh, man, you bad mother!” And I said, “What’ You have the nerve to speak to me after this travesty on stage. I don’t even want to see your face, I don’t want to hear you, I don’t want to see you.” And it all came out, and in about 15 minutes later it was fine. But Tony couldn’t get it out, right’ And it was such a farce. Anyway, CBS called me about two weeks later and said, “So, we’re going to put it out.” And I said, “You’re going to put what out’ You’re not going to put that out. You put it out over my dead body. That’s terrible.” So they asked if we wanted to re-record it over at Columbia Studios on 52nd Street. So we all went into the great CBS Studio on 52nd Street where we did all those great things with Miles — In A Silent Way, Bitches Brew and all of that. So we start re-recording the tunes and in the meantime, Tony’s not looking at Jaco. I mean, forget about speaking, he’s not even looking at him. And Jaco’s already very nervous. So we start playing and we did my tune again. So we do one take and we go in the control room to listen back and Jaco says, “Well, I think we can do it better.” And all of a sudden Tony jumps in front of Jaco and says, “Better’ Better, motherfucker’!!” He pushed Jaco up against the wall. I had never seen Tony angry but that was like a little volcano action, man, I tell you. And Jaco’s like…”Hey man, I’m sorry, man, I’m sorry.” Tony didn’t hit ’em or anything, but when Tony got mad you just get out of the way. He had Jaco up against the wall and Jaco was like apologizing profusely. He knew he fucked up bigtime. So after 10 minutes of Tony blasting him with both barrels, Tony went into the studio and destroyed his drumkit. (laughter). And I said, “You gotta record with this!” He destroyed his kit and walked out of the studio and that was it. What a shame. But hey, who’s perfect in this world’ But I told Jaco off right away back in Havana. I got rid of all the rats and snakes right off the stage, but Tony had it balling up, stewing around there for a while for he finally exploded. He always had difficulty with getting it right out. So yeah…Jaco was crazy, but what a player! He was too much. Boy I miss him. I miss Tony too. What a tragedy.

    Trio of doom真是好。

  74. D Says:

SR is sure legendary. But I dont think he’s given anything new in the past decay??? Some musician evolves with their style, he didn’t? maybe I just haven’t dig him enough.

I’m quite excited about Jan Garbarek!!!!! :) Ali Farka Touré’s son could be interesting too. (I did listen to Ali a lot last yr.) And Richard Galliano — I love accordion! ER + SB is definitely one of the highlights.

Just thought 5 days is kinda short…. however it is long enough to send me broke :p

    D,
    what can i say.
    so special feeling about death.
